My Mother Said I Never Should

1) Sit on a cold floor too long or else I would get piles!
2) Bite my finger nails or else I would get worms.
3) Kiss girls or else my teeth would fall out. I had to test that one out straight away!

My Mother

My mother said I never should sit on a cold wall in my mini skirt because I'd develop piles. What I said my daughter never should was buy shoes she couldn't run in. Since she was carried home from the office party because she couldn't walk in the shoes she'd bought that afternoon, you can tell she really took my advice!

Jean

My Mother Said I Never Should...

... Close my eyes or ears to anyone or anything in the world.

... Underestimate the power and value of humour.

... Wear heels as I look like a man in drag. Clogs though, are a different matter!

... Be frantically dependant on anyone and her mother said the same to her.

... Let her hold me back.

Louie Ingham, Director

My Mother Said I Never Should

My mother said and still says many things. A few choice ones that probably give a slightly one sided picture but they are the things my sister and i still quote -

"Never clean too much, you will only find more dirt"

"Never eat too much before going out drinking, you won't be able to fit the pints in"

"Stride out and never look like you don't know where you are going"
(she was and still is a big advocate of women reclaiming the streets, as am I).

There were plenty more, but these three give an image of the upbringing I choose to remember.

Esther, Producer

My Mother Said I Never Should...

Run with scissors. Well, run anywhere really.

Lean against train doors (the old ones), as I may end up on the track.

Eat silicate gel packets, those little packets you find in new handbags and purses, that absorb dampness (this was when I was really tiny).

Throw things at my sister.

Eat fruit after 9:00pm.

Shout in inappropriate locations.

Lean too far out of my bedroom window.

Go too near the edge.

Squeeze my Ribena carton.

My Mother Said...

My mother said I should never go out the house with vinegar on my top.

I cant remember how old I was and my ma doesn't remember this event so cant help but I'm guessing I must be about 6. I was sat in the kitchen eating my dinner. Ma was washing the pots or tidying up or something like that. What I was eating for dinner I cant remember but it was something that I put vinegar on. I spilled some vinegar on my jumper and my ma, told me to go and change my jumper. I couldn't be bothered and insisted that it didn't matter. My ma told me that if I didn't change my jumper, when I went out to play, hungry cats and dogs would smell the vinegar, chase me and try to eat me. Petrified I went upstairs and changed my jumper pronto! I think I was 17 before I was able to use vinegar again, but even now I'm on the look out for hungry cats and dogs!

My Mother Said I Never Should

1. Don’t climb trees (because my elder brother had fallen out of one and broken his arm)

2.Never talk to the police. There must have been a story behind this one, but I was always too frightened to ask!

Kevin Dyer, Director
